In the begining

Believe it or not the internet has not always been around, in fact it wasn't commercially available until 1995!.

The internet began in the 1960's with an experiment by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), they wanted a computer network that would survive... you guessed it a nuclear attack. This would enable the military to maintain control of there missiles and bombers from any secure location even if part of the network was incapacitated.

In 1969 the first network was assembled by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) and was called ARPANET in linked four US Universities. ARPA was renamed The Defense Advanced Research  Projects Agency (DARPA) and work began on establishing new protocols to enable more diverse computer networks to communicate. ARPANET was using Network Control Protocol which only allowed communication between host on the same network.

1971 ARPANET grew in size to 23 hosts and 1973 it went international connecting to hosts at universities in England and Norway. Between 1974-81 the general public become aware of the uses of networked computers and ARPANET begins to move away from it's military roots and Telenet (1974) was the first commercial use and Usenet (1979) the first ever discussion group. By 1981 ARPANET  has 213 hosts.

1982-87 TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) and the "Internet" were born.  The IP part of TCP/IP is a set of rules for one network communicating with another each internet use needs to uniquely identified, the TCP part is responsible for breaking down the original data into smaller packets and then verifying the correct delivery of data and reassembling the original document at its final destination. A basic analogy is the snail-mail postal system, the packet is the envelope containing data the IP address is the house#, street name, city and postal code and the TCP is the postal system ensuring the correct delivery of the envelope.

1991 the World Wide Web was released to the general public and by the end of 1992 there were about 50 websites world wide. In reality the World Wide Web was not available for commercial use until 1995.
