Sandy Crest Medical Centre (Sandy Crest) warmly welcomed its first
patient on August 5th 2006. They are located in Sunset Crest,
Holetown, St. James in a bright yellow building obliquely opposite Chefette. The building was formerly occupied by the Royal Bank of
Canada, Ninety Nine Convenience Store and St. James Travel.
The name Sandy Crest represents a hybridization
of Sandy Lane and Sunset Crest. Sandy Crest prides itself on the
fact that they offer a five star service at an affordable price to
everyone. It is a facility that every Barbadian can be proud of.
Some 3 years ago the founding fathers of Sandy Crest realized that
there was a need for an urgent care facility in the north-western
part of the island. They visualized such a facility as serving
Barbadians who needed medical attention.
Bearing in mind that the Centre was to have a unique function the
founding fathers decided that there should be some guiding
philosophies that should underpin the design of the facility:
-
that the patient would be at the centre of the
design with a practical physical layout.
-
that the Centre should attract well qualified and
patient-friendly staff and the best available practitioners of the
science of emergency medicine.
-
that Barbadians – the sons and daughters of the
earth should be able to access the facility and enjoy its services.
-
that high quality modern finishes should be
utilized supplemented with a warm and inviting décor.
After opening they have continuously monitored
their standard of care via a continuous quality improvement (CQI)
program. CQI is an incremental process whereby they strive to
continuously improve the current process. Quality is defined as
meeting or exceeding a customer's expectations. Quality may be
represented by a number of factors – e.g. shorter waiting times,
quicker turn around in the processing of lab specimens, reducing the
waiting time for a radiological procedure, speeding up the filling
of prescriptions, the introduction of medical informatics, etc.
Essentially their CQI program embraces both the statistical (and
practical) understanding of their customer's needs and the ongoing
process of feedback and re-evaluation in order to enhance delivery of
quality care. They have no intention of resting on their laurels.
Sandy Crest is intent on delivering the highest
standards in walk in non-urgent and urgent health care to all of
their patients. Their service to all of their clients must is second
to none - worldwide.
Their staff includes some of the most highly
trained Emergency Physicians (ERP) – locally, regionally and
internationally. On all shifts there is a consultant grade ERP. This
is something that cannot be claimed by any other health care
facility on the island or for that matter in the region. Their
physicians are capable of treating from the generally less
problematical of medical conditions (e.g. the common cold, flu,
urinary tract infections, sun burn, skin rashes, joint pains, back
and neck pains, ear infections, foot ulcers, cold sores, sprains and
strains, eye infections, mild to moderate headaches, mild allergies,
minor trauma, gout, etc.) to the more complex of medical problems
(e.g. heart attacks, strokes, pulmonary embolisms, deep vein
thrombosis, poisoning, leptospirosis, suspected hemorrhagic dengue,
eye trauma, diabetic coma, pregnancy complications, acutely severe
headaches, asthma, fractures, trauma, slipped disc, burns, acute
abdomens, major allergies, gastrointestinal bleeds, etc.)
Sandy Crest currently employs 6 Emergency
Physicians, 12 nurses, 5 clerical/ administrative staff, 5 security
guards and 5 cleaning staff. Their compliment of 33 staff is likely
to expand in the coming months as the demand for their services
grow.
